Coal Brief – May 2024

In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION FROM COAL

69% of the electricity produced in May came from CO2-intensive fuels, with 33.0% from hard coal and 22.3% from lignite. The share of hard coal was once again at a record low. Renewables provided as much as 31% of electricity.

 

COAL PRODUCTION AND SALES

COAL PRODUCTION – 3.49 Mt ↘️

COAL SALES – 3.27 Mt ↘️

Coal production and sales are down again, to 3.31 million tonnes (-5% m/m) and 3.15 million tonnes (-4% m/m), respectively. In both cases, these are the second-lowest values ever.

 

HARD COAL RESERVES

TOTAL – 12.8 Mt =
HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES – 5.1 Mt ↗️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES, BELONGING TO POWER PLANTS – 0.21 Mt ↘️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT POWER PLANTS – 7.4 Mt ↘️

Reserves at mining sites increased by 170 thousand tonnes compared to April. A decrease in coal reserves at power plants meant that total reserves fell by 70 thousand tonnes.

 

EMPLOYMENT

NUMBER OF PEOPLE EMPLOYED IN MINING COMPANIES – 75 723 ↘️

Employment decreased by 145 jobs compared to the previous month. It is 37 positions higher than a year ago.

 

COAL PRICES

COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 513 PLN/t ↗️

Coal for electricity production (PSCMI1) cheaper – in May it was 482.11 PLN/t (22.39 PLN/GJ). This is about 1/3 less than at its peak during last spring and summer.

COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 615 PLN/t ↘️

Coal price for heating (PSCMI2) continued its decline and is at its lowest in more than two years at 591.56 PLN/t (24.97 PLN/GJ).
