Coal Brief – April 2024

In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION FROM COAL

72% of the electricity produced in April came from CO2-intensive fuels, with 34.7% from hard coal and 20.7% from lignite. Hard coal with the lowest share in the mix in the history of the Polish power sector. This is due to low electricity demand and good wind and solar weather conditions.

 

COAL PRODUCTION AND SALES

COAL PRODUCTION – 3.49 Mt ↘️

COAL SALES – 3.27 Mt ↘️

Coal production in April down to 3.49 million tonnes (-3% m/m, -1% y/y). This is the second-worst result ever for the Polish mining sector, after the pandemic May 2020. Sales were not much better, falling to 3.27 million tonnes (-2% m/m, -2% y/y).

 

HARD COAL RESERVES

HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES – 5.1 Mt ↗️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES, BELONGING TO POWER PLANTS – 0.21 Mt ↘️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT POWER PLANTS – 7.4 Mt ↘️

Total coal reserves in April were virtually unchanged. Power plants’ reserves at mining sites and power plants decreased. Once again, reserves at mining sites increased – the last time they were this high was in June 2021.

 

EMPLOYMENT

NUMBER OF PEOPLE EMPLOYED IN MINING COMPANIES – 75 723 ↘️

Employment fell for the third month in a row, this time by 192 jobs m/m. In April, it stood at 75 723 positions, 185 more than a year ago.

 

COAL PRICES

COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 513 PLN/t ↗️

The PSCMI1 index rose for the first time since September 2023 (+6% m/m, -27% y/y). In April, it was at 513 PLN/t, the highest level since the beginning of this year.

COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 615 PLN/t ↘️

The PSCMI2 index fell in April to 615 PLN/t (-1% m/m, -43% y/y). Since the beginning of the year, its value has visibly stabilised, changing marginally from month to month.
