In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM COAL
77% of electricity produced in January came from emissive fuels, out of which 38.3% from hard coal and 20% from lignite.
COAL PRODUCTION – 4.12 Mt ↗️
COAL SALES – 3.99 Mt ↘️
Hard coal production increased by 90 thousand tonnes in January to 4.1 million tonnes (+2% m/m, +2 y/y). Sales amounted to 125 thousand tonnes less than production – 4 million tonnes (-5% m/m, -8% y/y).

Total hard coal reserves declined slightly in January to 12.8 million tonnes. This is mainly due to a (seasonal) decrease in reserves at power plants – by 350 thousand tonnes. The sum of other reserves increased slightly.
EMPLOYMENT – 76 506 ↗️
Employment increased slightly and is already at its highest level in almost two years, up by 383 positions m/m to 76 506. However, at that time, in Q1 2022, average production was 4.77 million tonnes per month. In January this year, it was almost 14% lower. The year-on-year increase in employment is 844 jobs.
COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 506 PLN/t ↘️
The PSCMI1 index recorded a massive fall in January (-18% m/m, -28% y/y). 506 PLN/t is the lowest value since July 2022, although historically still high. Before 2022, the price of coal for electricity generation had never exceeded 300 PLN/t.
COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 607 PLN/t ↘️
The PSCMI2 index deepens the decline. 607 PLN/t is -13% m/m and -45% y/y, and almost -60% below the price peak in September 2022. Between 2011 and 2021, the price fluctuated between PLN 190-360 PLN/t.
