
In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION FROM COAL
74% of the electricity produced in March came from CO2-intensive fuels, with 35.9% from hard coal and 20.7% from lignite. Coal another month with a share of <60% in the mix. Solar with an increase of 3 percentage points y/y and generation higher than fossil gas.

In March, hard coal production and sales changed only slightly since February – a decrease by 3% and an increase by 3%, respectively. Compared to March last year, as much as 15% less coal was mined and 17% less sold.

Total coal reserves fell slightly in March. There was a decrease in reserves of the power industry, which purchased less than they had pledged, thus reducing its stockpiles. Their amount is similar to that of last March. On the other hand, there is more coal extracted by the mines, which they are unable to sell – over 3 million tonnes more than a year ago!
EMPLOYMENT
NUMBER OF PEOPLE EMPLOYED IN MINING COMPANIES – 75 915 ↘️
Employment didn’t change significantly. It fell by 137 jobs m/m to 75 915, going below 76 thousand for the first time since September 2023. It is still 489 positions higher than a year ago, though.
COAL PRICES
COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 482 PLN/t ↘️
The PSCMI1 index fell for the sixth consecutive month. In March, the index reached 482 PLN/t (-1% m/m, -32% y/y), the lowest since July 2022.
COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 619 PLN/t ↗️
The PSCMI2 index rose to 619 PLN/t in March (+2% m/m). On a year-on-year basis, its value is 38% lower.
