Coal Brief – December 2023

In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

YEARLY BRIEF 2023

Due to the data concerning the last month of the year being finally available, we’re including an additional briefing of the whole 2023 data on the chart below. What is more, tomorrow (22.02) we will publish a broader comment by our expert Bernard Swoczyna.

Data - December 2023

ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM COAL – 78% of electricity produced in December came from emissive fuels, out of which 40% from hard coal and 20% from lignite. December was the first month in the history of the Polish power industry in which electricity production from wind was greater than from lignite!

COAL PRODUCTION – 4.03 Mt ↘️

COAL SALES – 4.19 Mt ↗️

Hard coal production down to 4 million tonnes in December (-13% m/m). Sales virtually at the same level as in November – 4.2 million tonnes.

HARD COAL RESERVES IN POLAND (TOTAL) –  13.1 Mt ↘️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES – 4.2 Mt ↘️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT MINING SITES, BELONGING TO POWER PLANTS – 0.4 Mt ↗️
HARD COAL RESERVES AT POWER PLANTS – 8.5 Mt ↘️

December was the only month in 2023 with a decrease in total hard coal reserves – they amounted to 13.1 million tonnes. A double increase in power plants’ reserves at mines ↗️ to 0.4 million tonnes.

EMPLOYMENT – 76 123 ↘️

Employment with a slight decrease of 36 positions m/m, to 76 123 – a value similar to those in October and November. A year-on-year increase of 653 jobs.

COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 657 PLN/t ↘️

The PSCMI1 index declined once again. It reached 657 PLN/t in December, the lowest value in 2023. The average 2023 price, however, was almost ¾ higher than in 2022.

COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 705 PLN/t ↗️

The PSCMI2 index this time with a rebound. The value in December was 705 PLN/t, the second lowest in 2023. The 2023 average was 896 PLN/t – 12.5% higher than in 2022 and as much as 3 times (!) higher than in 2021.
