Coal Brief – November 2023

In the middle of each month, we publish a set of key statistics on the coal market in Poland on our blog and X (Twitter). The data is published with a 1.5-month delay, following announcements by the Energy Market Agency and the Industrial Development Agency, Katowice Branch.

Data - November 2023

ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM COAL – 76% of electricity produced in November came from emissive fuels, out of which 42% from hard coal and 21% from lignite. More electricity from CO2-intensive sources, especially gas (¼ more than in October, 12% share in monthly production). Share of coal and lignite in the electricity mix was much lesser than in previous year – 63% vs 72%.

COAL PRODUCTION – 4.64 Mt ↘️

COAL SALES – 4.18 Mt ↘️

A slight decrease in hard coal production (to 4.64 million tonnes) and sales (to 4.18 million tonnes). Both values are close to those of November 2022.

HARD COAL RESERVES AT POWER PLANTS – 8.9 Mt ↘️

Another month with an increase in reserves (+2% m/m) which are the largest since February 21′. The amount of coal stocked at the mines (4.3 Mt) was responsible for the increase. It has been rising throughout most of 2023.

EMPLOYMENT – 76 159 ↗️

Only a slight increase in employment – up by 34 positions m/m. A noticeable year-on-year increase of almost 700 jobs and a general rising trend since 1.5 years.

COAL PRICE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION (PSCMI1) – 666 PLN/t ↘️

The PSCMI1 index saw a significant decrease. It was 666 PLN/t in November – the lowest this year.

COAL PRICE FOR HEATING (PSCMI2) – 649 PLN/t ↘️

The PSCMI2 also had a strong decline. It was at 649 PLN/t, the lowest since July 2022 and the second month under the price of coal for electricity production (PSCMI1).
